Sisätilojen päivitysten jälkeen siirryimme ulkotöihin: aloimme harventaa mökin ympärillä kasvavaa tiheää metsää sekä poistaa ikkunoiden ristikoita, jotta sisään saataisiin enemmän luonnonvaloa ja suurista ikkunoista kaikki hyöty irti.

Haluamme voida katsella ympäröivää metsää ja nauttia järvimaisemasta suoraan ikkunoista. Lisäksi turvallisuuden kannalta ei ole ihanteellista, että mökin aivan vieressä kasvaa niin paljon puustoa. Niinpä raivasimme pienempiä puita ja kaadoimme yhden suuren, lahonneen puun. Terveet isot puut saavat kuitenkin jäädä paikoilleen jatkamaan tärkeää työtään hiilen sitojina.

Panostimme akkukäyttöiseen moottorisahaan (josta tuli nopeasti yksi uusista lempityökaluistani!) metsänhoitotöitä varten.

Järvinäkymä ikkunoista on jo hieman avartunut muutaman puun kaatamisen jälkeen, mutta tämä tulee olemaan monen vuoden projekti. Yhdestä asiasta olemme kuitenkin melko varmoja: Kivirinteen polttopuita tuskin tarvitsee koskaan ostaa!

Following our upgrades indoors we started to tackle the dense growth of forest next to the cabin and remove the grilles from the windows to let in some extra natural light and really take advantage of their large size.

We want to be able to see into the surrounding forest and enjoy the lake view from the windows. There is also the safety aspect of having so much ‘wood’ so close to the cottage. So we cleared some small trees, and cut down a large tree that was rotten. We will leave the large healthy trees to continue being the carbon straws that they are. We splashed out on a battery powered chainsaw (one of my new favorite tools!) to work on the forest.

The lake view from the windows is better after chopping these few trees down, but this will be long process over many years. However, I do believe we will never have to buy firewood for Kivirinne!
